Start ssh-agent service on Windows 10

  • To check if ssh-agent service is running:
    Get-Service ssh-agent
You will see the status of the service. For example:
    Status Name DisplayName
    ------ ---- -----------
    Stopped ssh-agent OpenSSH Authentication Agent
  • If the status is Stopped, we need to change the StartupType to Manual: open Powershell as administrator and execute the command below:
    Get-Service -Name ssh-agent | Set-Service -StartupType Manual
    or simply do
    Set-Service ssh-agent -StartupType Manual
  • Now we can start the ssh-agent service:
    ssh-agent -s
    in Powershell or
    eval $(ssh-agent -s)
in Git-Bash. We can now check the status should be Running
