Reorder Gmail filters

• Settings -> Filters and blocked addresses
• Select: "All"
• Click "Export" button, it will download a file called MailFilters.xml
• Edit MailFilters.xml file with a text editor, re-order the filter entries, and save the file
• Select: "All" filters in Gmail and click "Delete" button. It will delete all filters
• Click "Import filters" link, then choose the edited MailFilters.xml file, then click "Open file" button to import it.
• After all filters are imported, click "Create filters" button to apply the filters.

Hotmail (Outlook) denied POP3 access from Gmail

Recently, my Gmail failed to access my hotmail via POP3:

Server denied POP3 access for the given username and password.
Please contact Microsoft's Support Team for more information on POP access.
Server returned error: "Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password. [Error="ProxyNotAuthenticated" AuthResult=0 Proxy=KL1PR0201MB1655.apcprd02.prod.outlook.com:1995:SSL]"

It was working fine for a few years. Suddenly stopped working. I searched and found the reason: Microsoft turned off POP3 access on my account without any notification. So turning it back on solved the problem:

dotproject: send emails using gmail

1. A gmail account is required to authenticate with smtp.gmail.com server.
2. Install and configure postfix to send mails using smtp.gmail.com [detail...]
3. edit /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini:

   
   [mail function]
   ; For Unix only.  You may supply arguments as well (default: "sendmail -t -i").
   ; http://php.net/sendmail-path
   sendmail_path = "/usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i"
     

4. Login to dotproject as admin, "System Admin" -> "System Configuration", in "Email Settings" section, set "Email Transport"

5. Now the task logs can be send to contacts using gmail smtp server.

Configure postfix to send emails via smtp.gmail.com

1. Install postfix:

   apt-get install postfix libsasl2-2 ca-certificates libsasl2-modules
   

   • SMTP relay host: smtp.gmail.com:587
2. Configure postfix by editing /etc/postfix/main.cf:

   relayhost = smtp.gmail.com:587
   smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
   smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
   smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
   smtp_tls_CAfile = /etc/postfix/cacert.pem
   smtp_use_tls = yes
   

3. Create /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd file, which contains the gmail user name and password in the following format:

   smtp.gmail.com:587    username@gmail.com:password
   

4. Generate /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd.db file using postmap:

   sudo postmap /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
   

5. Secure the files by setting file permissions:

   sudo chmod 400 /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd*
   

6. Set up CA certificate for postfix:

   cat /etc/ssl/certs/Thawte_Premium_Server_CA.pem | sudo tee -a /etc/postfix/cacert.pem
   

7. Reload postfix:

   /etc/init.d/postfix reload

• The commands above tested on Ubuntu Linux 11.10
• To send a test email from command line:

  echo "this is a test mail." | mail -s "test" youremail@yourdomain.org
  

• if mail is not installed, try

  sudo apt-get install mailutils
  

• Configure postfix to send emails via smtp.gmail.com
• Import Gmail certificate into java keystore
• Configure exim4 to send emails via smtp.gmail.com
• Configure Gmail clients
